Simple as that. And not only is it the final game in the Wizardry series, it is also the final of the Dark Savant Trilogy, which consists of Wizardry 6, 7 and 8. We had to wait nine years for 8 after VII, but you know what, it was worth the wait. To some of us anyway. For those of us that played Wizardry Gold, the wait was a little shorter, but still, five years is a long time to wait for the final story of an amazing story arch and series of games.Depending on how you ended VII, if you did, then you have multiple beginning story archs to be a part of, then again, so to you have multiple endings.Remember in the beginning of Zelda: OoT, where you have to find the three gems to unlock the Temple of Time? Well, I think that borrowed from this entire story, because that is it. You have to find three gems, but make no mistake... you will not do it as quickly as you'd like. And then the story is just plain weird after you get them, because then you have to become a Templar. And well... that is the funny part, you will see. This title also takes away from the stepping from spot to spot of the previous two titles and you are able to walk (via first-person perspective) and turn and such in a full 3D environment. And even better, you can see the enemies this time, no random popping of battles. It may not seem like it, but in its day, this was amazing stuff to see. This game is amazing even today, so give it a go, you will enjoy it. It's fluid, it's great, and it will make you laugh with some of the story stuff, but I will not spoil anything. There are also mods for the game, however I have not tried any yet, as I am still giving it a go in vanilla forme. The game runs great, has multiple beginning and ending story paths and tells a great story for its time. I recommend this, especially if you enjoy the older RPG titles of PC gaming.. This is a game for you Magi-punk lovers. while you are confined to one planet, Mages in space is a ridiculously fun idea. Designing a party of 6 right from the get go is also a very nice feature that a lot of games don't have these days, and it which lets you get into playing as your characters. The game is a bit hard early on while you learn the controls and do your grinding, potentially learning what makes a bad party, (like one without a dedicated healer.)I highly reccomend going into the controls and switching things to WASD, because arrow keys are agonizing to use. and it took me a while to find that holding right click let's you mouse control instead of the Numpad. once you get used to that, this game get's amazing.. An unsurpassed classic RPG. No game has offered such a combination of deep character development, reach dialog options, clever tactical combat and a crazy world to explore. It's a shame that there's no more Wizardry game to pick up it's banner.I bought it on CDs when it came out. Then bough it here when my CDs got stolen. I'd buy it 3rd time if it mattered :-). To this day W8 is STILL probably the best RPG ever made IMHO. I have never spent the big bucks on any of the newer games, nor do I have the hardware to handle any of them with my poor old machine, but I've logged A WHOLE LOT of hours on W8. And ya know what? I'm gonna log some more here in a few minutes :-)I can't say this about many other games on Steam, but I do say this about W8:BUY THIS GAME. Example of one of the finest and earliest modern first person turn based CRPGs with unique aspects that adorn the game.Game with its rich details and deep nature comes close to D&D experiences of isometric games immersion wise that I had as a player. It's as much an unique game for RPGs as E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy is to shooters or 'regular' Quake is for that matter. Strange and different yet captivatingly fun and memorable.Game has very detailed character creation sheet with Classes like ''Ninja'', ''Samurai'' and ''Monk'' (amongst others) and further deep character creation and combat based systems. Game's also heavy on the action and I like it with UI style that it has which is very remeniscent of dungeon crawlers of old.Game is a true milestone and a columniation of an era from an age in gaming history and it shows because among other things it still stands.A proverbial 'pillar of eternity' in its class and of the likes that you probably won't be seeing made anymore in that particular style. The game has a sort of prototype feel to it because in esence in our gaming culture it is a rare game. It comes from an age that as quickly it dawned it equally fast disappeared, it seems leaving a trail behind with some memorable titles.Ultimately it's a product of its time and in this sense game is very monumental. So we could say this is truly an unique game if nothing for the very imsersive and action packed experiences it delivers. One of the rare games that combines Sci-Fi with fantasy and blends it into the gameplay. It's got this Giger-esque feeling to it that's sort of hard to describe, especially considering that the game is odd but the monsters and some settings in the world are evident of this. It's an unique and cherishable art style and a dark, empty and desolate place fighting monsters. The particular style of dungeon crawling took off in Japan and became very popular with countless clones being reproduced. I thought that as an interesting and a fortunate fact for this particular game that as a series spans its roots back in history. Games that were ultimately very influential but rather forgotten in the realms of time.Very, very excellent. Just makes me want there was more.. This game is pure and simple amazing. There is a reason the people who have played it clamered to get it rerelased on any platforms. I have put in MANY MANY hours into this game. and still it is one of my favorites. This game was a labor of love as it drove the company bankrupt and still they finished it long after checks stop comming in. and even released a patch. Prosunparralled character customization, Still unmatched by almost any game today. The game is fairly open world for its time, and still today has a you can go anywhere and do anything approch to the game from the start. 100's of hours worth of game play and replayablitiy. Replayability, this alone makes this game almost never ending in possibilities. random moster generators, and random loot generators also make the game never the same thing twice. cons, Graphics are dated. even with mods the game engine is limited in what it can do. Difficulty. The game can be hard to even the ones who have played it for years. If you had in Mad god's Cosmic forge program you can change almost anything about the game. Truely Truely wonderful.. Quite simply the best RPG of all the time. Gameplay is off the scale!. It's more modern than its graphics imply - this game isn't just some old-school zombie that was kept alive by fans, it's an RPG that may be slow at at times, and have more than a few quirks that do require research before building your party, but it has a much deeper system than at first appears. It has true 3d, like an FPS while controlling a full party, and the party is arranged on a grid where "short range" is determined by what quarter of the grid is facing the enemy - attacks to the rear attack your rear line mages first, while your front line fighters cannot reach the enemy. It has an odd hybrid point-buy combined with train-through-use system, as well - skills are both bought and then trained through use, making player choices not be so much a min-maxxing for what skills are most valuable and worth your points, as much as it is a choice of what skills you can train through use the easiest, and which ones need those level-up skill points to get jump-started.If anything, Wizardry 8 is a transitional game. It seems clear that Sir-Tech was working hard to modernize their game while still keeping the depth of their old games, and it's a shame they couldn't have gotten past this point to create a Wizardry 9 that would have more fully brought the game into being both a modern RPG as well as the homage to the RPGs of years past. However, this game gives you all you need to see where they were going.. I've played this game through from beginning to end approximately once every year or two since 2001. I used to own it on 3 disks, then got a digital version, and finally got the Steam version to better play it on multiple computers. I love this game and keep coming back to it because it's just that good. The Good:+ Extensive party customization. There are tons of race and class combinations, but even beyond that there are choices to make regarding which weapons to specialize in, which spells to learn upon level-up, etc. The game is different every time I play.+ Surprisingly good voice acting for 2001. And the way you talk to NPCs is very free-form. I learn new things each time I play.+ Powerful Strategy. Customize the formation your party travels in, choose defensible positions for resting, bottleneck large groups of enemies. +Replay value out the wazoo. Different enemies appear in different places, items are randomized, and there are a million ways to customize your characters. Plus there are mods out there to change the whole game if you do actually get bored. The Bad:- It's just a bit dated. That's it really. The graphics are poor, the world is small and parts of it are a bit empty. There is a large focus on combat rather than exploration, and the combat moves a little slow even for a turn-based game. If you like tabletop RPGs that offer a lot of customization, this is a great video game equivalent. If you like strategy RPGs that make you think about how to position your characters and feature slow, methodical combat, you'll probably love this too. If you're nostalgic for old-school video game RPGs, this is probably one of the most polished from the 90s era.It doesn't do a lot of NEW things but it does a lot of old ones really well.
